Man Dies After Argument Over World Cup Match in Comilla

A 38-year-old auto-rickshaw driver, Md. Shoriful Islam, has died in Comilla after a dispute over a World Cup football match. Shoriful, originally from Nilphamari, had been living in Comilla for eight months with his wife and two daughters, working to support his family. The incident occurred on Tuesday night in the Dhanpur area of Adarsha Sadar Upazila, during a match between Argentina and Egypt. Local witnesses and reports suggest that Shoriful, who was primarily a Brazil supporter but reportedly favored Egypt in this particular match, got into an argument with a group of young men who were supporting Argentina. The argument escalated into a physical assault, resulting in Shoriful's death. His wife, Beauty Banu, is distraught, mourning the loss of her husband and the sole breadwinner, and has appealed for justice. Shoriful's two daughters, who were studying in Nilphamari, were meant to be enrolled in schools in Comilla. Police are investigating the incident, and while the body has been handed over to the family after an autopsy, no arrests have been made yet. The primary suspects, two local youths, are reportedly in hiding, and their families are allegedly attempting to settle the matter financially. The shop where the match was being watched has been closed since the incident.
