Man Dies After Rotterdam Shooting; 'Infamous Street' Scene of Violence

A 32-year-old man has died from injuries sustained in a shooting incident that occurred around 5:30 AM on the Nieuwe Binnenweg in Rotterdam. The victim was rushed to Erasmus MC in critical condition but later succumbed to his wounds. The event followed an altercation, according to police, and resulted in the arrest of four women and three men, some of whom were in a vehicle. A resident, who heard seven shots and loud shouting, witnessed emergency services attending to the victim on the street, followed by a significant police presence. This incident adds to the street's reputation, which, despite its popularity for shops, cafes, and nightlife, has a long-standing history of public nuisance and safety concerns. The Nieuwe Binnenweg has been a site of issues like drug crime and decay since the 1980s, although recent investments have revitalized parts of the area. However, complaints regarding homelessness and public drug use have resurfaced. In 2019, rapper Feis was fatally shot on this street. Another resident, who lives nearby, also heard the shots and called the police, observing women without shoes and scantily clad amidst shouting. Police secured a black BMW and a grey Volkswagen Golf from the scene. This shooting follows another incident on the same street the previous night, where one person was injured; it is currently unknown if the two events are connected.
