Man Encounters Jaguar on Trail in Mato Grosso, Brazil

Sales consultant Joelton Ares experienced a tense encounter with a jaguar while hiking near Cachoeira dos Namorados in Vila Bela da Santíssima Trindade, Mato Grosso, Brazil, on Tuesday, May 28th. While filming the scenery, Ares captured a brief moment of the jaguar emerging from behind a rock. The footage, though somewhat obscured by distance, shadow, and vegetation, clearly shows the animal observing him. Ares recounted that his immediate priority shifted from filming to self-preservation upon realizing the danger. He attempted to put his phone away to free his hands, feeling a surge of fear at the animal's size. Hiking alone and an estimated three kilometers from his motorcycle, Ares felt his anxiety heighten due to the isolation. He recalled standard advice for such encounters: avoid running, do not turn your back, and do not advance on the animal. The jaguar remained still for several seconds, watching his movements. Ares then slowly backed away, walking in reverse for about ten meters. Once the jaguar was out of sight, he ran a portion of the trail to increase the distance, constantly checking if he was being followed. Biologist João Carlos Biagini advised that the primary strategy is to remain calm and never run, as this can trigger a predatory response. He also suggested making oneself appear larger and, if possible, using a branch to slowly ward off the animal while retreating. Biagini emphasized maintaining visual contact with the jaguar and avoiding impulsive actions like climbing trees or jumping into water, as the animal excels at these maneuvers.
