Man Sentenced to 24 Years for Femicide After Suffocating Partner

Francisco Kennedy Anderson Alves do Nascimento has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for the femicide of Francinete Castro Sousa. The trial took place on Wednesday, May 29th, in Teresina, with the sentence delivered by the 2nd Court of the Jury of the capital. The crime occurred on December 22, 2022, when Francinete Sousa died from asphyxiation. Nascimento, who was in a relationship with Sousa, confessed to the crime. The court noted the accused's heightened culpability, acting with coldness and a lack of sensitivity against his partner, with whom he had lived since she was fifteen. The sentence details that he first struck the victim, rendering her unconscious, before suffocating her. In addition to the prison sentence, Francisco was ordered to pay R$ 300,000 in damages to the victim's family. The couple had three minor children at the time of the crime. The conviction included aggravating factors such as futile motive, asphyxiation, use of means that hindered the victim's defense, and femicide. Femicide is defined as a crime committed against a woman within the context of domestic and family violence or due to her gender. Judge Zilnar Coutinho signed the conviction, and the initial sentence is to be served under a closed regime. Francisco Kennedy Anderson Alves do Nascimento, who was already in preventive detention, will remain incarcerated to serve his sentence.
