Manmohan Singh Cleared in Coal Scam Case by Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has accepted the closure report filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), granting a clean chit to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and other accused individuals in the coal scam case. This decision follows the CBI's investigation and submission of its findings to the court. Following the Supreme Court's verdict, the Indian National Congress party has demanded an apology from the current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. The coal scam, also known as the 'coal block allocation scam', involved alleged irregularities in the allocation of coal blocks by the government between 1993 and 2010. Manmohan Singh, who was Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, had been summoned by a special CBI court in 2014 in connection with the allocation of the Talabira II coal block to Hindalco. The CBI's closure report, now accepted by the Supreme Court, indicated a lack of sufficient evidence to prosecute the former Prime Minister. The Congress party's demand for an apology from Prime Minister Modi suggests a political implication of the court's decision, potentially related to past political rhetoric or investigations during the current government's tenure.
