Marine Le Pen Launches Presidential Campaign After Appeal Court Upholds Conviction

Marine Le Pen, the far-right leader in France, commenced her presidential campaign on Wednesday, March 8th, less than a day after an appeals court confirmed her conviction for embezzling public funds. Accompanied by her running mate Jordan Bardella, Le Pen visited a fair in La Flèche, southwest of Paris, where she engaged with supporters. She downplayed her legal issues, stating that the court had restored her eligibility to run for office and that voters' freedom to choose was paramount. The Appeals Court on Tuesday, March 7th, found Le Pen guilty of diverting 1.4 million euros from the European Parliament, intended for parliamentary assistants. However, the court reduced her period of ineligibility, allowing her to compete in the upcoming presidential elections. Le Pen, aged 57, had her prison sentence reduced to three years, with two suspended and one to be served under house arrest with an electronic tag. Her ineligibility term was also shortened to 45 months, with 30 suspended. Since she has already served the majority of the remaining 15 months from a 2025 conviction, she is eligible to run in the French presidential elections scheduled for April 2027. Bardella expressed satisfaction with the decision, viewing it as a recognition of partial innocence for their party, the National Rally.
