Maritime Safety Awareness Session Held at Meghna River Fishing Community School

A special awareness and guidance session on safe living and preventing boat accidents was held at the Meghna River Fishing Community School, operated by Prothom Alo Trust. The event, which took place on July 23, featured Md. Azizul Islam, In-Charge of the Moju Chowdhury's Hat Naval Police Outpost, as the chief speaker. He emphasized the critical importance of swimming skills for all students, stating that knowing how to swim is essential for saving lives in riverine Bangladesh. Islam highlighted that many lives are lost annually due to the inability to swim, a tragedy he urged students to prevent by acquiring this vital skill. He also cautioned students about the severe risks of river travel during adverse weather conditions. Islam strictly advised against venturing onto the river or taking boat trips during storms, strong winds, or cloudy weather, as the river becomes extremely turbulent and dangerous under such circumstances. He requested teachers to maintain constant vigilance on students regarding these safety measures. The naval police in-charge urged immediate reporting of any maritime emergencies to the police. Teachers and local dignitaries praised the naval police's timely initiative, which provided students with practical knowledge on maritime safety and life preservation.
