Minas Gerais reports 78 femicides in first half, matching last year's toll

Minas Gerais recorded 78 femicides in the first half of this year, a figure that matches the number of cases reported during the same period in the previous year, according to the State Secretariat of Justice and Public Security. However, attempts at femicide saw an increase across the state, with 97 reported incidents, two more than in the first semester of 2025. In the state capital, Belo Horizonte, there was a decrease in completed femicides, with six women killed compared to nine in the same period last year. Conversely, femicide attempts rose by 50% in Belo Horizonte, increasing from 10 to 15 cases. The state is currently investigating two recent cases as femicides. One incident involved a suspect who confessed to killing his girlfriend in their apartment in the Camargos neighborhood. Another case involves a married couple who were both police officers; the wife, a captain, was reportedly brought to the hospital deceased by her husband, a sergeant, who claims she was found unconscious after falling down stairs. The Military Police command in Minas Gerais is classifying this latter case as domestic and family violence.
