Mother and Stepfather to Face Jury for 5-Year-Old's Murder in Itapetininga

A mother and stepfather in Itapetininga, São Paulo, Brazil, will stand trial for the murder of their 5-year-old daughter, Maria Clara Aguirre Lisboa. The defendants, Rodrigo Ribeiro Machado (stepfather) and Luiza Aguirre Barbosa da Silva (mother), are accused of killing the child in October of the previous year. The case is being handled under judicial secrecy. The victim's body was discovered buried in a shallow, concreted grave in the backyard of the family home. Forensic reports indicate the girl died from mechanical asphyxiation due to suffocation, with evidence of dirt in her trachea suggesting she was alive when buried. The autopsy also revealed cranial trauma, consistent with prior assaults. Authorities believe the couple buried the child approximately 20 days after her death, concealing the crime by concreting the body. The investigation began after the child's paternal grandmother reported her missing to the Tutelary Council in early October.
