Mother Injured Protecting Son, 10, During Dog Attack in Espírito Santo

A 10-year-old boy sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a dog in the Castelhanos neighborhood of Anchieta, located in the South of Espírito Santo, Brazil. Security camera footage captured the moment the mixed-breed dog ran towards the child as he walked with his mother. The boy attempted to flee but was caught by the animal. His mother, Sineia Mongin, intervened to protect her son, but fell during the attempt, allowing the dog to continue its attack. The boy used his arms to fend off the animal until the tutor's son intervened and restrained the dog. Mongin described the terrifying experience, stating the dog initially jumped on her son's neck and that she feared for his life when she fell. Although the boy is recovering physically, the family is still processing the trauma. Residents have reported that the same dog has allegedly attacked other people and animals previously; one resident, Solange Vieira, recounted being attacked by the same dog in the same location earlier this year, attributing the incidents to an open gate. The Civil Police are investigating the case, which was registered last week, and plan to interview the boy's family and the dog's tutor. The investigation aims to determine how the dog escaped and if the tutor was negligent. The delegate of Anchieta, Luiz Paschoal, indicated that allowing a potentially dangerous animal to roam freely or without proper care could constitute a criminal offense, punishable by imprisonment or a fine under the Law of Contraventions. The dog's tutor stated she was asleep when the animal escaped and has offered to cooperate with authorities.
