Mother's Tip Leads to Arrests in Businessman's Kidnapping and Murder in Carapicuíba

The investigation into the kidnapping and murder of businessman Marcelo Magalhães de Almeida in Carapicuíba, São Paulo, was significantly aided by the mother of two suspects. Zemira Santos Soares reported her sons, Lucas Soares de Lima and Paulo Sérgio Soares Almeida, to the Civil Police on July 17, after learning of their alleged involvement from a suspect's wife. She stated that her sons had participated in the kidnapping and murder of a prominent individual, a case widely covered by television news. During a visit to her grandchild, Paulo Sérgio allegedly confessed to his mother that his brother, Lucas, whom police identify as the crime's mastermind, had created a major problem that would implicate everyone. Lucas himself reportedly threatened his mother with death if she didn't lend him R$700, suggesting the funds could have prevented the tragedy. The mother, initially unaware of the crime's specifics, was informed that her sons had robbed, kidnapped, and killed a powerful person. She then went to the police station to report them. Police believe Lucas Soares de Lima, also known as 'Quadrado,' orchestrated the kidnapping and murder with assistance from his brother Paulo Sérgio Soares Almeida and friend Júlio César Moura Batista. Marcelo Magalhães was allegedly lured to the abduction site by Lucas, who had previously received financial support from the victim but had recently stopped. Investigators found videos and photos on a suspect's phone showing Magalhães gagged in captivity, with one suspect sitting on the victim's car. Another suspect, identified as 'Paulinho' (likely Paulo Sérgio), was recorded admitting to the kidnapping and homicide while driving the victim's car. The suspects are accused of transferring approximately R$8,000 from Magalhães' accounts before killing him and disposing of his body in a stream in Carapicuíba. The businessman's body has not yet been found, and extensive searches are ongoing in a wooded area. Authorities are also seeking a fourth suspect. The three arrested suspects are Lucas Soares de Lima, 28, Paulo Sérgio Soares Almeida, 27, and Júlio César Moura Batista, 23. They face charges including qualified homicide, kidnapping, and concealment of a corpse.
