Neighbors Rescue Woman from Kitnet Fire in Vitória After Door is Forced Open

A fire erupted in a ground-floor kitnet in the Itararé neighborhood of Vitória, Espírito Santo, on the evening of Monday, November 27th. A woman was inside the residence alone when the flames spread and was rescued by neighbors who broke down her door. Although no one was injured, the resident lost all her furniture, clothing, and appliances. Family members reported that the woman stated her younger brother, aged 30, who has schizophrenia, locked her inside the kitnet before leaving shortly before the fire began. The family also indicated that this brother had previously allegedly attempted to harm another sibling who resided there but was not present during the incident. Neighbors, including resident Euzi Pereira, attempted to extinguish the blaze with extinguishers and water buckets after the rescue, but the fire consumed both rooms of the kitnet. Pereira described the chaotic scene, with smoke filling the building and residents evacuating, including an elderly, non-ambulatory mother-in-law who was carried out. The Military Fire Department was called to the scene and used approximately two thousand liters of water to control the fire, which remained confined to the kitnet. Residents of the second and third floors were permitted to return to their homes after an inspection. Lieutenant Natã of the Fire Department stated that the cause of the fire is undetermined, with all possibilities, including accidental or personal causes, remaining open. The police were alerted to provide guidance on the next steps, as a formal investigation request would typically come from the residents.
