Oiapoque Artisan Transforms Recycled Materials into Art, Overcoming Unemployment

Augusto Sampaio, a resident of Oiapoque in the far north of Amapá, has found a new livelihood and artistic expression by repurposing discarded materials. After facing unemployment, Sampaio turned to recycling, transforming waste into art and a source of income. His work is currently being showcased at the 3rd International Fair of Oiapoque, which runs from Thursday, May 30th, to Sunday, June 2nd, at the Natizão Municipal Stadium. Sampaio, who previously taught art to children in French Guiana, decided to focus on recycling and artisanal crafts in 2023. He emphasizes that his process not only gives new life to raw materials but also contributes to environmental preservation. The entrepreneur believes his work effectively combines ecological consciousness with income generation in the border region. The fair itself aims to be a strategic platform for market access, connecting small businesses, promoting tourism, and fostering commercial and cultural exchanges between Amapá, the Guiana Plateau, Suriname, and Caribbean nations. In addition to Sampaio's work, the event features over 80 exhibitors from 16 municipalities in Amapá, with a significant emphasis on indigenous culture. Indigenous artisan Arilson Alexandre is presenting works that represent indigenous women and various ethnic groups, highlighting the cultural significance and resilience of indigenous peoples.
