Pakistan's Population Policy Should Focus on Youth Aspirations, Not Just Numbers

World Population Day's theme this year, 'Realising the hopes and aspirations of young people — today and for the future,' shifts the focus of population policy from mere numbers to individual choices. This approach emphasizes that policies should aim to empower young people with opportunities in education, employment, marriage, and parenthood, rather than solely managing birth rates. These opportunities are intrinsically linked to access to healthcare, quality education, economic security, and gender equality. When these fundamental conditions improve, demographic outcomes naturally tend to follow. This perspective is particularly crucial for Pakistan, where public discourse often centers on census figures and fertility rates, potentially overshadowing the lived realities of its youth. Many young Pakistanis face significant barriers, including premature school dropouts and a lack of stable employment opportunities in the labor market. Furthermore, women often encounter obstacles in accessing education, healthcare, and decision-making power over their own lives.
