Palestinians Hold Mass Funeral for 112 Bodies Recovered from Gaza Rubble

Palestinians held a collective funeral on Tuesday for 112 bodies recently recovered from the rubble in Gaza, nearly three years after an Israeli attack in 2023. The victims belonged to the Hassayna and Abu Sharia families, who were killed when warplanes destroyed a residential block in Gaza City's Sabra neighborhood on November 22, 2023. Initially, around 40 bodies were recovered using improvised tools and bare hands, but the majority remained buried. The Civil Defense agency, operating under the Hamas-administered Ministry of Interior, reported that 40 of the recovered victims were children, and an additional 157 bodies are still missing. A relative of the victims, Taysir al-Hassayna, stated that the deceased were killed for remaining in their homes and expressed despair over the fate of the missing, describing their disappearance as if their bodies had "evaporated without a trace."

The recovery of these remains was facilitated by a ceasefire that began in October, allowing for operations in parts of the devastated Gaza Strip. This event contributes to the rising official death toll in the ongoing conflict, which began with the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, resulting in approximately 1,200 deaths and 251 hostages taken. The subsequent Israeli offensive has led to an estimated 73,377 Palestinian deaths, according to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Ministry of Health. Zaher al-Waheidi, head of the ministry's records department, indicated that at least 7,400 people are still buried under debris, with the actual number potentially much higher due to entire families being wiped out in single bombings without survivors to report them missing. The funeral procession saw the bodies, draped in Palestinian flags and some identified by photographs, carried through narrow streets amidst destroyed buildings to a nearby cemetery.

Despite the ceasefire, the Gaza Ministry of Health reports that at least 1,252 people have been killed in Gaza since its implementation, with women and children constituting the majority of fatalities. Israel maintains its strikes target militants involved in the October 7th attack or other violations, reporting five Israeli soldiers killed since the ceasefire began. Gaza remains largely devastated, with most of its 2 million inhabitants displaced and living in dire conditions in tent camps, leading to rodent infestations and disease outbreaks. Negotiations for post-war transition and disarmament have seen little progress, with Hamas retaining its weapons and Israel maintaining control over significant portions of the territory. International efforts, including discussions between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Nikolay Mladenov, a representative of the Peace Council, aim to address these issues, following a proposed agreement by the United States-created council for Israel to cease military operations and Hamas to halt militant activities, though Israel has expressed "serious security concerns" regarding the proposal.
