Peruvian Religious Leaders Unite in Prayer for National Unity

In response to Peru's significant social and political challenges, leaders from twenty religious organizations and communities will convene for the sixth annual "Oramos por el Perú" (We Pray for Peru) interfaith ceremony. This event, organized by the Peruvian Interfaith Council – Religions for Peace, is part of the official Fiestas Patrias celebrations and aims to foster national unity. The gathering is scheduled for Tuesday, July 21st, at 7:00 p.m. in the Anglican Cathedral of the Good Shepherd. It will bring together faith leaders, government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and prominent figures, with the President of the Republic traditionally in attendance. Under the theme "A United Country in Faith and Hope," this year's ceremony seeks to highlight shared values that strengthen coexistence, promote dialogue, and renew commitment to the well-being of all Peruvians, transcending religious differences. The ceremony will feature reflections from Monsignor Salvador Piñeiro, Archbishop of Ayacucho and President of the Peruvian Interfaith Council, followed by prayers for unity and hope. Representatives will offer supplications for families, the nation, democracy, justice, child protection, indigenous peoples, and security, addressing key societal concerns. The Peruvian Interfaith Choir, composed of members from various faith communities, will provide musical accompaniment, symbolizing fraternity, dialogue, and hope. Participating denominations and groups include the Catholic Church, Anglican Church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Jewish Community of Peru, the Islamic Association of Peru, the Baháʼí Community, the Soto Zen Buddhist Community, the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, and Greek Orthodox churches, alongside interfaith organizations, indigenous communities, youth networks, and other faith groups dedicated to peacebuilding. Since its inception, "Oramos por el Perú" has become a cornerstone interfaith event, demonstrating how dialogue among diverse faiths can build bridges for peace, reconciliation, and hope for all Peruvians.
