Pirassununga, a Brazilian municipality in São Paulo state with 73,545 inhabitants, has cultivated a unique identity by intertwining nature, science, and culture, symbolized by its fish emblem. The region's connection to the Mogi Guaçu River, particularly the Cachoeira de Emas waterfall, played a pivotal role in inspiring the environmental journalism program 'Terra da Gente' in 1992. The program documented the fish migration during piracema, a journey of over 600 kilometers, which became a landmark in environmental reporting and highlighted Brazil's riverine biodiversity. This collaboration extended to research efforts, with the National Center for Research and Conservation of Continental Species (CEPA) in Pirassununga working on aquatic biodiversity conservation, especially for endangered fish species. Environmental analyst Izabel Book de Garcia noted that CEPA's work provides crucial data for national conservation policies.

Nature's presence extends to the University of São Paulo (USP) campus, where over 30% of the area is dedicated to native forests and ecological preservation, attracting diverse wildlife. The 'Clique Silvestre' project encourages community participation in documenting campus biodiversity through the iNaturalist app, transforming public observations into valuable research data.
