Porciúncula Civil Defense Responds to 10 Fires in Under a Month

The Municipal Civil Defense of Porciúncula, located in the Northwest Fluminense region of Brazil, has responded to ten fire incidents in less than a month. These fires have required significant team mobilization across various parts of the city and highlight the dangers posed by fire during the current dry season, which is expected to last until October, according to the city hall. One notable incident on the evening of June 27th in the Doutor Nelson neighborhood saw flames approach a home with a bedridden resident. Access challenges for the water truck complicated the response, but the fire was contained before reaching the house. Another fire occurred on July 11th in the Boulevard neighborhood, where the Civil Defense, with support from the Fire Department, controlled flames in a vacant lot near residential areas, preventing further spread. Earlier, on May 2nd, a fire in the Doutor Nelson housing development consumed approximately 1.5 hectares and neared nearby homes. This blaze spread rapidly, increasing risks to residents, but was also brought under control before impacting properties. The Civil Defense is reminding the public that starting fires on land, pastures, or vegetation areas is an environmental crime. They urge citizens to avoid setting fires, especially during the dry season when fire propagation risks are heightened.
