Rio de Janeiro Sees Robberies Every 8 Minutes, Fear Disrupts Daily Routines

Rio de Janeiro is experiencing a high rate of robberies, with an average of one incident occurring every eight minutes. Between January and May of this year, the city recorded 25,425 robberies of all types, a 6% decrease compared to the same period in 2025. Despite this reduction, the frequency translates to approximately seven robberies per hour. Motorists and pedestrians alike report a pervasive sense of fear, altering their daily routines to mitigate risk. Incidents often occur at traffic signals and intersections, where criminals exploit brief stops to commit crimes, sometimes using what appear to be firearms. Residents describe changing habits, such as keeping car windows closed at all times and avoiding specific routes or times of day. Some individuals have developed strategies like concealing their mobile phones or waiting for public transport in groups for safety. The issue affects various areas, including Zona Sul, Barra da Tijuca, and Zona Norte, with specific concerns raised about locations like Avenida das Américas and the Buraco do Padre intersection. While police presence is noted in some areas, residents suggest it is often intermittent, allowing criminals opportunities to act.
