São Paulo Train Delays Spark Viral Video of Passengers Walking on Tracks

A video depicting passengers walking on train tracks during service disruptions in São Paulo has gone viral on social media. The footage, edited by 22-year-old video editor Wendell Monteiro, humorously portrays commuters on Line 11-Coral as if they were participating in a fashion show while evacuating the station. Although initially mislabeled as Line 12, Monteiro clarified that the incident occurred at the Guaianases station on Line 11-Coral in the city's East Zone. The video has garnered over 1 million views and 100,000 likes on a social media platform. The disruptions on Thursday, August 23rd, were caused by an electrical failure between the Tatuapé and Brás stations, affecting Lines 11-Coral, 12-Safira, and 13-Jade. This led to severe overcrowding and forced passengers to seek alternative travel methods. Monteiro, who resides in Ferraz de Vasconcelos, was delayed for hours on his commute. He described his train being stopped for 25 minutes before proceeding at a reduced speed, turning a five-minute journey into nearly 20 minutes. Upon reaching Guaianases station around 7:40 AM, passengers were instructed to disembark and wait for another train. Monteiro stated that by 9:00 AM, with reports of people on the tracks and service interruptions, he decided to record the video as passengers began walking along the rails. Station turnstiles were also closed to prevent further overcrowding, leaving some passengers with no option but to walk on the tracks. Monteiro intended the video as a form of humor and a critique of the public transport system, aiming to highlight how people find moments of levity even in difficult situations.
