Samsung Unveils Pricier Foldable Phones Amid Rising AI Component Costs

Samsung, a leading South Korean technology firm, has launched its latest foldable smartphones in London, introducing sleeker designs and higher price points compared to previous models. The increased costs are attributed to the rising expense of components, particularly memory chips, which are crucial for powering artificial intelligence applications. The new lineup aims to solidify Samsung's position in the foldable market, a segment it has pioneered since 2019, as it anticipates potential competition from rivals like Apple. TM Roh, head of Samsung's mobile division, stated that the new devices set a "new standard for foldables" and advance the premium mobile experience. The flagship Galaxy Z Fold8, measuring 4.5 millimeters thick when unfolded, features a 7.6-inch screen optimized for video and starts at $1,900. Paolo Pescatore, a technology analyst, highlighted the Z Fold8 as a significant device underscoring Samsung's market leadership. The premium Z Fold8 Ultra, successor to the Z Fold7, begins at $2,100, is 4.1 millimeters thick, and weighs 215 grams. The more compact Z Flip8, designed for social media, is the most affordable, starting at $1,200. The surge in memory chip prices, driven by AI demand, has also led other manufacturers, such as Apple, to increase prices for their devices. Analysts suggest Apple's potential entry into the foldable market could legitimize it for a broader audience, prompting Samsung to innovate aggressively to defend its established territory.
