Severe Hailstorm Devastates Eldorado do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul

A powerful hailstorm struck Eldorado do Sul, a city in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, during the early morning hours, causing widespread destruction. The storm uprooted dozens of trees, toppled utility poles, and damaged the roofs of over a hundred homes. Significant damage was reported in the Parque Eldorado neighborhood, home to approximately 10,000 residents. A section of the BR-290 highway experienced traffic delays due to a fallen tree, and a truck driver narrowly avoided injury when his vehicle went off the road. Residents described the suddenness and intensity of the storm, with one contractor, Anderson Nunes de Azevedo, reporting his car was "demolished" and his home flooded. The roof of a local Gaúcho Traditions Center was torn off, and a builder, Sérgio de Melo, expressed astonishment at the storm's force, noting it could even dislodge concrete walls. Despite the extensive damage, no injuries were reported. However, 444 people were displaced from their homes, and the Civil Defense provided tarps and humanitarian aid. The storm also impacted a local market, destroying its roof and an adjacent pavilion. Merchant Claudionir Goulart de Souza lamented the loss of eighteen years of work, with solar panels and roofing completely destroyed. This event follows Eldorado do Sul's declaration of a state of emergency after the 2024 floods, with the city now facing renewed hardship. Meteorologist Natália Pereira suggested that while such phenomena are common in southern Brazil at this time of year, they are increasingly linked to the heat and humidity associated with El Niño. Residents are also concerned about the loss of electricity and water, with one homeowner, Geni de Menezes, expressing fear of running out of water. Another metropolitan city, Canoas, also experienced a severe storm, with one resident, Maria Priscila, reporting her home's roof was instantaneously ripped off by strong winds.
