Shark Attack Survivor, 11, Celebrated Home After Leg Amputation

João Lucas Castor Nemezio Sales, an 11-year-old boy who survived a shark attack, was joyfully welcomed home after being discharged from the hospital on Monday, June 6th. He had been hospitalized for over a month following the incident at Piedade beach in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, near Recife. The attack resulted in the amputation of his left leg and fractures to his left hand. Upon his release, João Lucas was greeted with balloons and celebratory signs, with one reading "You won! Our champion." He expressed gratitude for the support, donations, and prayers that aided his recovery. During his hospital stay, João Lucas was initially treated at the Hospital da Restauração (HR) for four days in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being transferred to the private Hospital Unimed in Recife. The medical team at Hospital Unimed also honored him with a celebration upon his discharge. Notably, another young person, 19-year-old Marcela Vitória de Lima Santos, also suffered a severe shark attack on June 1st at Boa Viagem beach, losing her right leg. She was also discharged from the ICU on the same day as João Lucas and remains hospitalized in the ward at HR, recovering from her injuries and awaiting further surgery. The state committee investigating shark incidents confirmed a bull shark attacked João Lucas, while a tiger shark was responsible for Marcela's attack.
