Sole Survivor of Basketball Team Bus Crash Discharged After 45 Days

Bruno Lira da Silva, a 17-year-old athlete, has been discharged from the hospital after 45 days of treatment following a bus accident that claimed the lives of seven members of his basketball team. The bus, carrying the Juazeiro do Norte under-19 basketball team, overturned on June 15 on the CE-187 highway in Tauá, Ceará, resulting in seven fatalities and numerous injuries. Bruno was returning with the delegation from a competition in Sobral, where his team had just won the championship. He received initial treatment in Tauá before being transferred to the Hospital Regional do Cariri, where he underwent four surgeries. He is now recovering at home with his family and expressed happiness at being able to honor his friends and embrace life. Bruno, a student aiming for higher education in Physical Education, plans a gradual return to his studies, supported by his school. His mother, Ana Maria Lira, described his recovery as a new beginning and highlighted his strength. Despite needing physiotherapy for his left arm and a future procedure, Bruno remains determined to return to basketball next year. His recovery is being closely monitored, and he has already received visits from friends, including fellow survivor Cícero Igor Silva Lima, who was hospitalized for five days. Police investigations into the accident are ongoing, with initial findings ruling out mechanical issues with the bus and any substance impairment in the driver. The investigation is being handled by the Civil Police in Tauá.
