Sophia Case: Mother and Stepfather Convicted for Torture and Neglect in Brazil

A court in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, has convicted the mother and stepfather of two-year-old Sophia Ocampo for torture and omission in connection with her death in January 2023. The sentencing was published on Friday, May 10th, in the Official Gazette. The case is under judicial seal, so specific penalties and reasoning were not immediately disclosed. The judge accepted the Public Prosecutor's Office's request, finding Christian Campocano Leitheim guilty of physical and psychological torture resulting in Sophia's death, with an aggravated penalty due to the victim's age. Stephanie de Jesus da Silva was convicted of omission for failing to prevent or report the abuse, also with an aggravated penalty as the victim was her daughter. Sophia, aged two years and seven months, was brought to a health unit already deceased, having previously received over 30 treatments there. A necropsy revealed the cause of death as a cervical spine fracture and indicated sexual violence. Phone records showed the couple discussed fabricating a story for the police. Civil Police investigations indicated prior reports of abuse in March and November 2022, which were forwarded to the judiciary, and the child's situation was also reported to the Conselho Tutelar (Child Protective Services). Sophia's father had previously sought custody, citing hunger and abuse, but an inspection found no apparent injuries at the time. The lawyer for Sophia's father cited "systemic omission" by public agencies, including health posts, police, and the Conselho Tutelar, for failing to identify and halt the cycle of violence, noting the child had presented with a broken leg and numerous bruises.
