Spanish National ID Card (DNIe) Finally Works on Mac After Frustrating Process

A long-time Mac user has finally managed to get Spain's electronic National Identity Document (DNIe) to function on their macOS system after a challenging and patient endeavor. The process was described as an "enigma," highlighting significant difficulties in integrating the DNIe with Apple's operating system. While the digital certificate from the FNMT has been a reliable alternative for electronic administration tasks, the DNIe presented unique hurdles. An attempt to use a Trust Ceto card reader, advertised as compatible with macOS, failed because it relies on NFC technology, which reportedly adds an extra, undocumented complication on macOS that prevents the DNIe from working. This crucial detail was not available on official support channels. Subsequently, the user acquired a Trust Primo card reader, which connects physically via chip contact. After discovering a counter-intuitive detail – inserting the DNIe upside down despite official illustrations showing it the other way – the DNIe successfully functioned on the Mac. However, the user notes that the overall experience is far from straightforward, though an easier, one-click solution called McDNIe also exists, albeit with associated costs.
