Stepparent on Trial for 2-Year-Old's Murder in Taubaté

A stepfather is currently on trial before the Jury Court in Taubaté, São Paulo, Brazil, for the alleged murder of his 2-year-old stepson. The trial, which began on Wednesday, May 22nd, was underway in the early afternoon with the jury interrogating the defendant. Following this, closing arguments from the prosecution and defense are expected, before the jurors deliberate and issue a verdict. The court anticipates the session will conclude around 8 PM.

The tragic incident occurred on February 13, 2025, in the São Gonçalo neighborhood of Taubaté. The 2-year-old boy was taken to the city's Regional Hospital exhibiting numerous injuries. Despite medical efforts, the child succumbed to his wounds. Hospital staff, suspecting foul play due to the nature of the injuries, alerted the Civil Police. Initially treated as a suspicious death from a supposed domestic accident, the case quickly transitioned into a homicide investigation.

Investigators from the Specialized Criminal Investigations Division (Deic) noted inconsistencies in the stepfather's account, as he was the sole adult present with the child at the time of the alleged accident. This led to him becoming the primary suspect. A medical report confirmed the child's death resulted from the injuries and a cranial trauma, with the Civil Police also reporting evidence of torture identified in the examination. During the investigation, blood-stained clothing belonging to the child was seized. The stepfather was apprehended on May 31, 2025, over three months after the boy's death, in Pindamonhangaba following a police stop. A pre-trial detention warrant for homicide had already been issued against him by the court.
