Strong Winds Damage Animal Shelter in Rio de Janeiro, Seeking Aid

A powerful windstorm with gusts exceeding 100 km/h struck Guaratiba, in Rio de Janeiro's West Zone, on Wednesday, September 29th, causing significant damage to the Indefesos NGO. The shelter, which currently houses over 400 rescued animals saved from abuse and abandonment, had its walls and part of its kennel structure destroyed by falling trees and the force of the wind. Fortunately, no animals were injured or killed during the incident. Rosana Guerra, the NGO's director, took to social media to appeal for temporary foster homes and financial assistance to rebuild the damaged facilities. She expressed deep distress, stating that seven years of hard work and dedication were largely destroyed in a matter of hours. Guerra explained that the animals need to be temporarily relocated for their safety while the affected areas are reconstructed. The NGO is seeking both financial aid to repair the damage and temporary housing solutions for the dogs displaced by the fallen trees. The severe weather also caused widespread disruption across Rio de Janeiro, including power outages affecting neighborhoods in the capital and Baixada, and paralyzed public transportation systems. The mayor's office advised residents to avoid non-essential travel and stay clear of open areas and building overhangs due to numerous tree falls and traffic disruptions. Civil defense authorities issued safety recommendations, including securing outdoor objects, avoiding shelter under trees, and staying away from power lines and unstable structures.
