Sudanese Army Recaptures Key Highway Near Besieged Al-Obeid

The Sudanese Army has reportedly recaptured a vital highway connecting the capital, Khartoum, to the besieged city of Al-Obeid. This strategic 400-kilometer road, known as Al-Sadarat, was previously under the control of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The United Nations has warned of a potential humanitarian catastrophe in Al-Obeid, drawing parallels to the Al-Fasher massacre last year, attributed to RSF militants. The recapture of the highway by the Sudanese Army is expected to facilitate the movement of troops, weapons, and essential supplies, potentially averting a large-scale RSF assault on the North Kordofan state capital. This development follows a multi-day offensive that pushed RSF forces west of the highway. In response, the RSF allegedly conducted drone attacks on Al-Obeid, though no casualties have been reported. RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo has reportedly encouraged his fighters to intensify their efforts against the government army. Al-Obeid has been under fire since the conflict between the Sudanese government and the RSF began in April 2023. The city, with an estimated half-million residents, has seen its population potentially double due to an influx of displaced people, exacerbating a severe humanitarian crisis with limited food supplies. The RSF had previously encircled the city from the north, west, and south, attempting to cut off the last remaining eastern supply route. International attention was drawn to Al-Obeid due to fears of a repeat of the Al-Fasher atrocities, where an estimated 6,000 people were killed last year amid widespread violence, rape, and looting by RSF militants, with accusations of ethnic cleansing and war crimes.
