Teacher Abducted and Assaulted Over Debt Dispute; Local Politician Accused

A মাদ্রাসা teacher in Pirganj, Rangpur, was allegedly abducted from a bank and assaulted by Ziaur Rahman Zia, the general secretary of the Chotra Union Awami League, and his associates. The incident occurred on Sunday afternoon at the Chotrahat market, stemming from a long-standing financial dispute over a loan between the teacher, Golam Rabbani, and Ziaur Rahman Zia. Rabbani, a lecturer at the Sorolia TM Fazil Madrasa, was reportedly taken from the Sonali Bank branch and beaten at a local business establishment, where he was also allegedly threatened. He became ill during the assault and was rescued by police after locals alerted the national emergency number 999. Rabbani received initial treatment at the Pirganj Upazila Health Complex and was subsequently transferred to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for further care. His wife, Ferdousi Begum, expressed fear and demanded justice, stating her husband was unjustly attacked. Ziaur Rahman Zia denied the allegations, claiming Rabbani owes him money and had previously extorted him by forcing him to sign blank documents and checks. Zia stated he had only gone to collect his debt and did not engage in any physical altercation. The Officer-in-Charge of Pirganj Police Station confirmed that no formal complaint has been filed yet but assured that an investigation and legal action would follow if a complaint is received.
