Teachers' salaries to be raised progressively, PM announces

Prime Minister Tareq Rahman announced that the salaries of primary and secondary school teachers across Bangladesh will be increased progressively. He stated that while previous governments focused on infrastructure, they neglected human resource development in education. The Prime Minister emphasized that without adequate training and improved remuneration, it is unrealistic to expect better performance from teachers. He believes that increasing teachers' salaries is essential to prevent them from taking up second jobs, which often forces primary school teachers to rush through classes or engage in other work like farming to support their families. Similarly, secondary school teachers face similar financial pressures. By raising salaries, teachers can dedicate more time and intellect to their students. The Prime Minister also mentioned a government plan to provide school dresses and bags to approximately 1.2 crore students in government primary schools, from Class 1 to 5, across all 65,000 primary schools nationwide. This initiative will be implemented progressively. During the parliamentary session, presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, the Prime Minister responded to several questions from Members of Parliament. He also noted that the current budget allocates 2% of GDP to the education sector.
