Teresina Residents Surprised by Early Ipê Bloom in July

Ipê trees, a prominent symbol of Teresina's urban landscape, have begun flowering significantly earlier than usual this year. Typically blooming in September, the Ipês are already displaying their vibrant flowers across various parts of the capital in July. Biologist Marlete Ivanov from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) suggests that this premature blooming may be linked to factors such as global warming and climate change. Ivanov explained that rising temperatures increase water evaporation and plant transpiration, leading to a greater demand for water by the trees. Additionally, she pointed to "heat islands" – areas characterized by dense construction, asphalt, and poor air circulation – as contributing factors. In these environments, plants might perceive the altered conditions as a signal to shed leaves and initiate flowering to ensure reproduction. The specialist also highlighted soil sealing, where surfaces like concrete and asphalt impede rainwater infiltration, as another significant influence. This phenomenon directly hinders root development and water absorption, while indirectly contributing to higher temperatures that further increase the plant's water needs.
