Three Adults and a Minor Indicted for Attempted Murder of Transgender Woman in Brazil

Police in Itatinga, São Paulo, Brazil, have concluded their investigation and indicted three adults for attempted homicide against a 33-year-old transgender woman. The victim was severely beaten with kicks and wooden clubs in an attack that occurred on the morning of July 11. A 16-year-old minor was also identified and is subject to measures under the Child and Adolescent Statute. As of the latest update, no arrests or detentions had been made. The final police report indicated the victim was also subjected to death threats and offenses related to her sexual orientation and religion. The three indicted adults are two men, aged 18 and 20, and a woman, aged 24. They face charges of attempted homicide, qualified insult based on sexual orientation, and religious intolerance. The assault reportedly began after a dispute over a beer. The victim stated that an unknown man took a beer from her cooler without permission, and when she complained, the argument escalated into a physical altercation. During the beating, the victim reported homophobic slurs and death threats. Her religious items, used in Quimbanda practices, were also intentionally broken, and she reported prejudiced comments about her faith. The violence ceased only when a witness intervened, preventing a blow to the victim's head. The case was investigated by the Itatinga Civil Police with support from the Special Operations Sector and has been forwarded to the judiciary.
