Tractor Thefts Spark Fear and Financial Loss in Rural São Paulo

Rural producers in the Mata Negra region of Ajapi, Rio Claro, São Paulo, are living in fear due to a series of tractor thefts over the past eight months. One producer reported a financial loss estimated at R$ 220,000. The escalating insecurity has forced some farmers to relocate their machinery to safer locations, such as Araras, which disrupts their agricultural operations and leads to further losses. Residents who cannot move their equipment live in constant anxiety, not only for their property but also for their physical safety and that of their elderly family members. The local Civil Police have registered five tractor thefts in the district this year, with two machines recovered, and are actively investigating the remaining cases. The State Secretariat of Public Security (SSP) stated that all reported incidents are rigorously investigated and that security forces continuously monitor crime rates, implementing strategies to combat all forms of crime, including property offenses. Despite these assurances, the community is demanding increased security, such as more frequent police patrols or a dedicated guard post in Ajapi, to address the growing wave of crimes. One farmer, Junior Seneda, recounted being held hostage for an hour and a half before a tractor was stolen, noting that the situation has become increasingly tense with a total of seven tractors stolen in the area. Another resident, Margarete Seneda, shared the distress of her cousin, who lost R$ 220,000 worth of equipment due to theft, as he lacked insurance and was devastated by the loss of his life's work.
