Two West Nile Fever Patients Critically Ill on Ventilators in North Macedonia

Two patients infected with West Nile fever in North Macedonia are in critical condition and require mechanical ventilation. The patients, aged 76 and 66, are being treated in the intensive care unit at the Clinic for Infectious Diseases. Dr. Fadil Cana, the clinic's director, reported that out of seven confirmed cases of the viral illness, these two individuals have experienced a significant deterioration in their health. The clinic is monitoring the situation closely as the number of confirmed cases rises. West Nile fever is typically transmitted through the bite of infected mosquitoes. While many infections are asymptomatic, severe cases can affect the nervous system. Health authorities are urging the public to take precautions against mosquito bites, especially during peak biting times. These precautions include using insect repellent, wearing protective clothing, and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed. The clinic continues to provide updates on the patients' conditions and the overall spread of the virus within the country.
