Uruguayan Journalist Emiliano Zecca Explores Philip Morris Lawsuit in New Book

Uruguayan journalist Emiliano Zecca, born in Fray Bentos in 1985, has authored a non-fiction novel titled 'El humo, la patria o la tumba' (The Smoke, the Homeland, or the Tomb). The book delves into the significant lawsuit filed by the transnational corporation Philip Morris against Uruguay in 2010. This legal action was a response to Uruguay's stringent anti-tobacco policies, initiated during the presidency of Tabaré Vázquez, the nation's first oncologist president. Philip Morris initiated the lawsuit against the government ten days before Vázquez's term ended, with his successor, José Alberto Mujica, continuing the legal battle. The case became popularly known as the 'David versus Goliath struggle'.

Zecca's meticulously researched book reveals how tobacco companies concealed and misrepresented the health consequences of their products and their adulteration. He highlights the plight of flight attendants exposed to secondhand smoke, who took thirty years to be recognized as victims. The work also examines the World Health Organization's initial stance of neutrality. Speaking at an academic discussion in Peru, Zecca clarified that his book is not mere anti-smoking activism but an exploration of history and its characters, addressing the stigma of tobacco-related death alongside the seductive allure and contradictions of smoking. He argues that the 'David versus Goliath' analogy is insufficient, proposing instead the image of a hydra, where cutting off one head results in two more growing in its place, referencing the emergence of new nicotine consumption methods like e-cigarettes.
