Venezuelan survivor rescued 8 days after earthquakes; aid efforts face government obstruction

A 44-year-old security guard, Hernan Alberto Gil, was dramatically rescued from beneath nine meters of rubble eight days after a series of earthquakes struck Venezuela. Gil survived by sheltering under a desk when the tremors began on February 24th. Rescuers from seven countries utilized acoustic detection equipment and a fiber-optic camera to locate and extricate him from the collapsed parking garage of a shopping mall. The rescue operation, which involved over 65 hours of work by firefighters, was a significant emotional event for the nation. Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government has not released an official number of missing persons, though the opposition has registered over 41,000 notifications. The United Nations estimates 50,000 people are missing. As of February 2nd, the official death toll stood at 2,295, with an estimated 11,000 injured. The most affected region is La Guaira, located about a 40-minute drive from the capital, Caracas. Despite the ongoing tragedy, numerous international NGOs and rescue teams have reported significant obstruction from the Venezuelan government, including demands for bribes, blocked roads, and military blockades. These hindrances have led some organizations, like Germany's ISAR, to cancel their missions, while others, like a Chilean rescue group, faced repeated document checks, with authorities suspecting them of espionage. The Venezuelan government claims these measures are to maintain order and ensure emergency routes remain clear, citing concerns that unqualified personnel could impede rescue efforts and increase accident risks.
