Victor Cravin Advances in Latin Grammy Selection Process

Victor Cravin, a 27-year-old singer-songwriter from Maranhão, Brazil, has progressed to the initial selection phase for the Latin Grammy Awards. The artist, originally from Bacabal, announced his advancement on social media on Tuesday, May 28th, for his EP "Indelicado." This selection does not yet constitute an official nomination for the prestigious Latin American music award. Cravin's musical journey began at home, influenced by his mother's diverse music listening habits, which sparked his interest in sounds, voices, and compositions. He spent part of his adolescence in Palmas, Tocantins, before moving to São Luís, where he currently resides and pursues his career independently. He has collaborated with independent collectives and production companies associated with the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), such as Irin Omi and Guriatã. Cravin, who holds a degree in Communication, focused his final academic project on the culture of the João Paulo neighborhood in São Luís, noting how Maranhão's cultural expressions have shaped his artistic identity. His music incorporates themes of his experiences as a Black and gay man, alongside references to Maranhão's popular culture, aiming to address these subjects with respect and care in his lyrics. The Latin Grammy selection process involves submissions from Recording Academy members and record labels, followed by eligibility reviews and category assignments. Subsequently, specialists assess submissions for compliance with award criteria, after which voting members of the Latin Academy participate in the first round to determine the nominees, with voting restricted by area of expertise. Finalists are determined after vote tabulation, and in the final stage, Academy members select the winners in each category.
