Water pipe burst causes sinkhole, closes street in Petrópolis, Brazil

A water main rupture early Friday, November 24th, caused a significant sinkhole to open on Gonçalves Dias Street in the Valparaíso neighborhood of Petrópolis, a city in Brazil's Serrana Region. Residents reported noticing the issue around midnight, with security footage capturing the moment water began flooding the street. The force of the leak tore up asphalt and caused a section of the road to collapse, leading to a complete traffic closure. Águas do Imperador, the water supply concessionaire, is currently working on repairs. CPTrans, the local traffic authority, has been deployed to manage traffic flow, and teams from the piped gas company were also called to assist. In response to the emergency maintenance, Águas do Imperador has temporarily suspended water supply to several neighborhoods, including Valparaíso, Quitandinha, São Sebastião, Siméria, Cremerie, Taquara, Mauá, and Independência, as well as specific streets and roads. The company stated that water service will be gradually restored after repairs are completed, with full normalization expected by the evening, potentially taking up to 24 hours for higher elevations. Detours are available via Monsenhor Bacelar Street, Fabrício de Matos Street, or the Vila Militar access. Public buses are rerouting through Visconde do Uruguai Street and adjusting their routes within the affected area.
