Winter Chill Causes $100 Million Loss for São Paulo Bananas

Low winter temperatures in São Paulo's Vale do Ribeira region are causing a physiological disorder known as "chilling" in bananas, leading to an estimated economic loss of R$ 100 million. This phenomenon affects the appearance of the fruit, causing the peel to darken, develop brownish or grayish spots, and superficial depressions when exposed to temperatures below 13°C. Despite the visual changes, the pulp of the affected bananas remains suitable for consumption and often possesses a sweeter flavor due to longer ripening periods of up to 150 days. In contrast, bananas from tropical regions are typically harvested within 90 days.

The Association of Banana Growers of Vale do Ribeira (Abavar) reports that the altered coloration leads to a depreciation of approximately R$ 1.00 per kilogram compared to bananas from Minas Gerais. Felipe Trigo, director of Abavar, stated that the fruit struggles to achieve market value. To combat this devaluation, Abavar plans to use a Geographical Indication (GI) seal from the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) to help consumers recognize the unique quality of these bananas, even with their blemishes. Research into special bagging methods to prevent chilling has been attempted but has not yet yielded successful results, with some attempts leading to premature spoilage.
