Woman escapes captivity in Brazil, rescued at Paraguay border

A woman in Ponta Porã, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, was rescued after escaping from a situation of domestic violence, kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment. She reportedly fled her home on Monday, February 13th, while her partner was asleep. The victim managed to jump over the house's gate, which was locked from the outside, and sought help from neighbors who then alerted the police. The woman told authorities that she had been subjected to physical and psychological abuse by her partner since Friday, February 10th. She stated that her partner, who allegedly uses drugs, would become violent when under the influence. He is also accused of breaking her phone on Friday to prevent her from contacting others and of keeping the house gate locked to restrict her movement. Responding officers observed bruises on the victim's chest, face, right eye, hands, arms, back, and legs. She reported that the assaults included punches, kicks, being slammed against a wall, and being hit with a broomstick. The victim also claimed she and her brother were frequently threatened with death by the suspect. The man was arrested at the couple's residence, where he was found sleeping and reportedly showed signs of intoxication and agitation. Both individuals were taken to the 1st Civil Police Station for further proceedings.
