Woman Punches Officer, Gets Punched, Falls With Baby; Police Probe

Police in Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil, have launched an internal investigation into an incident that occurred on Sunday, November 26th, at a convenience store in the Jardim Amorim neighborhood. Security camera footage captured a physical altercation between police officers and individuals during an approach. The incident began when officers attempted to apprehend a customer who refused to comply. During the commotion, a woman holding a baby stumbled and fell. Shortly after, another officer arrived and, in proximity to the team, bumped into another woman who had assisted the first and picked up the fallen child. The situation escalated when the woman reacted by hitting an officer's helmet, prompting the officer to strike her in the face, causing her to fall with the baby still in her arms. The 26-year-old woman, who was not identified, was taken to the police station and criminally charged with resisting arrest. Police stated the approach was initiated due to a perceived suspicious behavior by a man in the store. The officer involved reported using 'differentiated force' according to standard procedure to detain the woman after she allegedly assaulted his helmet. The Military Police confirmed the investigation will meticulously examine all circumstances, including the police actions, and stated they do not condone misconduct. The woman, who received the blow, told local media she did not file a police report but gave a statement and was released. She claimed the police had no reason for the approach and mentioned she was advised to undergo medical examination but had not yet done so.
